The history of HMS Example
HMS Example is the first ship to bear the name in the Royal Navy. Originally constructed as the lead ship of the Example Class (a build run of the Archer Class) including Express, Explorer and Exploit. The class are easily identifiable by their black hulls - the only RN surface vessels not to have grey hulls. The design was an offshoot of the Archer class designed as 40kt Coast Guard vessels for Oman in the late 70s and was superseded by the improved Archer class launched in the late 90s. Built by Watercraft Ltd (Shoreham by Sea) and launched in 1985. HMS Example was designated an Auxiliary Service Vessel (XSV 165) and utilised by the Royal Navy Auxiliary Service (RNXS) until the service was disbanded on 31 Mar 94. HMS Example was commissioned into the Royal Navy later that year with Mrs J P Barker as her Sponsor and in the presence of Flag Officer Scotland and Northern Ireland. She was re-designated P165 and transferred to the University Royal Naval Unit. Example is the first ship to bear the name in the Royal Navy.
